Day 10, Friday, June 8, 2007
Driving to Dawson Creek today. At breakfast in the hotel we met two couples from Missouri who were driving the ALCAN in 1930's Fords. On the way we saw a Moose and a number of deer and lots and lots of TREES! Gorgeous.
There were a few stops for roadwork, but nothing too bad. However, the Mosquitoes know we're here, and I'm getting nervous...
So I guess the town council of Beaverlodge
decided this was the best way to promote the town?
We pulled into Dawson Creek early in the day, and at the gas station met another V-Strom Rider. I think Craig told him that even though he may not realize it, that he was a SSYSO. Ed offered to take our photo at the "0 Mile Marker" sign for the ALCAN Highway.
The second photo is Ed... an Undercover Secret Society of
Yellow Strom Owners (SSYSO) rep of the Great North.
Ed invited us to his home later to see a video of his Alaska trip from the past summer. We met his wife, Carol, and their boys Ryan and Kyle. Very nice folks! We learned that they'd traveled for 4 months in Australia, and had been many places throughout the world. We went out for dinner, but first we took a drive to the Buffalo Ranch that had been featured on "Long Way Round"! We only saw one Buffalo, but it was a lot of fun to see "the PLACE" (that's the fan in me talking...) We ate dinner at Mr. Mikes, and it was delicious. It was fun to meet up with new friends and learn more about Canada. They had a great sense of humor and fielded about any question you could think of about the area. Ed recommended not a route change for us, but rather a schedule change... encouraging us to forge ahead tomorrow to Muncho Lake, then on to Whitehorse the next night where we could stay cheaper, drop the bags, and day trip into Skagway (which turned out to be a great tip).
The folks we met in the morning driving the old Fords showed up at our hotel that evening! One had a broken headlamp from a rock that hit the headlight.
