Day 8, Wednesday, June 6, 2007
Our new friends Mel and Jody
plan to keep their feet dry today!
Got up early, breakfast bars and coffee to start the day, then hit the road. Some very nice scenery:
You can really see the runoff from all the rain!Got to another ferry around 11 and only waited a few minutes before it arrived to take us across the lake. We both got really hungry by then, and ready for real food. The ferry was much smaller than the Osprey 2000 - no coffee shop, either.
Gorgeous lake ride though! Had breakfast at noon at Denny's and ate every crumb plus 4 cups of coffee. Only a little rain early in the day, then nice and cool and mosquito free. My kind of weather.
There has been a lot of flooding in western Canada, and we saw it firsthand today. At one stop the road was being cleared from a landslide. Here and there the creeks were above tree level and still rising. Just before we pulled into Golden one street was closed - in the distance was a farm that was inundated up to within a foot or two of the tops of the doors. Likely caught by surprise, as a number of vehicles were nearly completely covered too. Very sad to see, imagining some family being flooded out of their home.
Got to Golden and checked
into the Pioneer Motel:Perfect! Hot Tub running and waiting for the guests. We both feel spoiled. Met Canadian couple riding 2-up who were enjoying the hot tub. We discussed the flooding, and they told us that there had been flooding in 1995, 1997, and 2001, yet people in the floodplains wanted the government to pay for the damages. Better to not build in the lowlands. We chatted until the Hockey game was due to begin. They said they didn't know who to cheer for, as the Anaheim team had more Canadians than the Canadian team had. We headed back to the room to do laundry.
My stomach got a little upset from the dinner, but Craig got things in order by fetching me some Pepto Bismol from a shop down the street. The room also got very hot - around 77F even after we turned on the A/C. We played cards for a while - Craig taught me to play Schnapsen. Cool game.
